Global Yes to Conservation

The ecosystem is dependent on us for survival, and We must arise as intentional advocates of the environment. Humans are the causes of pollution, waste and disruption of biodiversity activities. Conservation means to protect, care and manage the Earth and its inherent resources for current and future generations. We have caused a lot of damages already. It is our responsibility to care for the planet, its resources and survival of all life for our future and collective well-being.

DEFORESTATION

Deforestation
is the purposeful clearing of forested land by humans for various reasons, such as agriculture, animal grazing, logging, mining, and urban development. Deforestation has many negative consequences for the environment, such as loss of biodiversity, soil erosion, carbon emissions, and climate change. Deforestation also increases the risk of zoonotic diseases spreading from animals to humans. Deforestation has occurred throughout history and continues to be a major problem in many parts of the world, especially in tropical regions.

SOME CAUSES OF DEFORESTATION (LOSS OF TREES)

  • Industrial agriculture: This is the leading cause of deforestation, as large areas of forest are cleared to grow crops or raise livestock, especially beef, soy, and palm oil.
  • Timber logging: This is the main cause of forest degradation, as trees are cut down for wood and wood products, such as paper and furniture.
  • Mining: This is a major source of deforestation and pollution, as forests are destroyed to extract minerals and metals, such as gold, copper, and iron.
  • Urbanization: This is a significant cause of deforestation and fragmentation, as forests are converted to make way for roads, buildings, and settlements.
  • Climate change: This is an indirect but serious cause of deforestation and forest fires, as global warming increases the frequency and intensity of droughts, storms, and pests that damage and destroy forests.

SOME POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS TO DEFORESTATION

  • Reducing, reusing, and recycling wood and paper products to minimize waste and save trees. This can also help conserve energy and water that are used in production.
  • Supporting sustainable forestry practices that protect forests from illegal logging, fires, and degradation. This can include buying certified wood and paper products, supporting forest conservation projects, and advocating for stronger forest policies.
  • Restoring degraded forests and planting new trees to increase forest cover and biodiversity. This can also help sequester carbon and mitigate climate change.
  • Empowering local and Indigenous communities who depend on forests for their livelihoods and culture. This can help them defend their land rights, manage their resources sustainably, and benefit from forest conservation.
  • Raising awareness and educating people about the causes and effects of deforestation and how they can take action to stop it. This can also help create a global movement for forest protection and restoration.
